Cook County deputies recover a $60,000 glycerin load after thieves clone the shipping papers
Investigators stopped a trailer in Thornton, Illinois, that had been rerouted with fake documents; no arrests yet.
On Sept. 17, 2026, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office Organized Retail Crime investigators learned that about 75 drums of food-grade glycerin—valued at roughly $60,000—had been taken and might be in Cook County, Illinois. Offenders had cloned the shipping documents to reroute the trailer away from its real destination.
Deputies tracked the commercial vehicle to the 16800 block of Canal Street in Thornton and stopped it. The load, about 41,336 pounds of 99.7% USP/FCC-grade glycerin that originated in Hammond, Indiana, was recovered intact and returned to the rightful owner. Glycerin is a common ingredient in food and pharmaceutical production.
No suspects have been arrested. The investigation into who cloned the documents and redirected the freight is ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office and reporting based on its account.
How the diversion worked
- Cloned or falsified shipping papers made the pickup or hand-off look legitimate.
- The trailer was headed toward a location in Thornton that investigators linked to a possible cross-docking spot.
- Task-force intelligence and a check of the bill of lading let officers intercept the truck before the drums could be transferred or sold.
